Drew Gerber recently blogged about the YouTube top ten viral videos for 2010. Drew cited Katherine Tasheff, Executive Director of Digital Media and Marketing at Hyperion as identifying three common elements of viral videos which are authenticity, connection and visceral. In other words they should “speak” to the viewer on a human level; touch them emotionally using humor, sympathy (pathos) or surprise; and it should be something they want to share. This is not as easy as it sounds but it is a good objective for any video project and by doing so may have the result of reaching viral status.However all this talk about viral video risks making people who have more modest success seem inadequate. The virals very often are not product related. They are typically people doing goofy stuff. The only way to increase your business or sell more product from them is to advertise over them. But what if you could get one thousand or ten thousand potential readers watch your video? Not viral status but a nice step toward getting your book in the hands of potential readers.Most independent book promoters such as self published authors and small publishers do not have the resources to create an outrageous video that may draw attention to the video but not really to their book. The first thing book sellers need is a book video trailer that engages their potential reader and is produced to help the reader decide if this is a book they want to buy or know more about.In the realm of marketing I think the viral video is akin to a publicity stunt. When it is achieved it is good for drawing attention to a brand and is best suited for consumer products that have a broad base of potential customers. Those marketers who are operating within a niche would be better served to use a more conventional marketing approach which is to know who your potential client is and communicate directly with them. Use video to communicate with that market and pay attention to the three points above, as they are good rules regarding any video communication in general.
