Tramadol and cancer pain management

Cancer pain control

According to the World Health Organization guidelines for cancer pain management, Tramadol has been considered as safe and effective Step II analgesic. Tramadol is also known as “centrally-acting opioid analgesic” that works in the central nervous system and acts like morphine in the body to relieve pain. Mild-to-moderate cancer pain can be controlled with Tramadol alone or in combination with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Tramadol works by improving the transmission of chemical messages in your brain and spinal cord. Serotonin and norepinephrine are the two chemical messengers that work as a bridge between two nerve cells for transmission of messages. Tramadol inhibits the reuptake of these chemical messengers in nerve cells and thus allow messages to be transmitted without any interference. This improves pain-reducing effects and enhances mood lightening effects. Tramadol also activates the spinal pain inhibitory system to get effective pain relief treatment.

Tramadol dosage

Tramadol can be taken in two formulations, for extended release or for immediate release. For immediate release, a dose of 50mg and for extended release, doses of 100mg, 200mg, and 300mg are advised. Extended release doses are used for chronic pain and long-term treatment. Tramadol used for extended release should be taken as whole tablets and should not be split or crushed before taking them. The dosage instructions for this medication should be followed according to your doctor’s recommendation to prevent any side effects. The dose of Tramadol depends on the factors such as your age, your medical condition, other medications, and how your response to Tramadol.

Precautions before taking Tramadol

You should not take Tramadol, if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. Also, avoid this medication if you have a history of drug or alcohol addiction. Tramadol can have drug interactions, so if you are taking any other medications, you should inform your doctor in advance. You should also talk with your doctor, if you are suffering from any health condition, such as, seizures, liver disease, kidney disease, lung disease, and allergies.

Apart from its mild-to-moderate side effects, Tramadol is considered as one of the most tolerated pain medications. The side-effects are temporary in nature and can be avoided if used according to a doctor. It has been found that Tramadol can improve the overall health of a person over a period of time. It improves functions of the muscles and stiffness, in addition to pain relief. Ultracet is another analgesic used for short-term treatment of moderate-to-severe pain. It is a combination of two pain-relieving agents Tramadol and acetaminophen.

The Health Benefits of Dancing — Including Specific Benefits of Different Dances

If you secretly sashay across your living room when you’re
home alone or long to cha-cha with your significant other,
you’re in luck. Not only is dancing an exceptional way to
let loose and have fun, but it also provides some terrific
benefits for your health.
In fact, Mayo Clinic researchers reported that social dancing
helps to:

Reduce stress
Increase energy
Improve strength
Increase muscle tone and coordination

And whether you like to kick up your heals to hip hop, classical
or country, the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI)
says that dancing can:

Lower your risk of coronary heart disease
Decrease blood pressure
Help you manage your weight
Strengthen the bones of your legs and hips

Dancing is a unique form of exercise because it provides
the heart-healthy benefits of an aerobic exercise while also
allowing you to engage in a social activity. This
is especially stimulating to the mind, and one 21-year study
published in the New England Journal of Medicine even found
dancing can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and other
forms of dementia in the elderly.
In the study, participants over the age of 75 who engaged
in reading, dancing and playing musical instruments and board
games once a week had a 7 percent lower risk of dementia compared
to those who did not. Those who engaged in these activities
at least 11 days a month had a 63 percent lower risk!
Interestingly, dancing was the only physical activity out
of 11 in the study that was associated with a lower risk of
dementia. Said Joe Verghese, a neurologist at Albert Einstein
College of Medicine and a lead researcher of the study, “This
is perhaps because dance music engages the dancer’s mind.”
Verghese says dancing may be a triple benefit for the brain.
Not only does the physical aspect of dancing increase blood
flow to the brain, but also the social aspect of the activity
leads to less stress, depression and loneliness. Further,
dancing requires memorizing steps and working with a partner,
both of which provide mental challenges that are crucial for
brain health.
How Good of a Workout is Dancing, Really?
The amount of benefit you get from dancing depends on, like
most exercises, the type of dancing you’re doing, how strenuous
it is, the duration and your skill level.
Says exercise physiologist Catherine Cram, MS, of Comprehensive
Fitness Consulting in Middleton, Wisconsin, “Once someone
gets to the point where they’re getting their heart rate up,
they’re actually getting a terrific workout. Dance is a weight-bearing
activity, which builds bones. It’s also “wonderful”
for your upper body and strength.”

Plus, dancing requires using muscles that you may not even
know you had.
“If you’re dancing the foxtrot, you’re taking long,
sweeping steps backwards. That’s very different than walking
forward on a treadmill or taking a jog around the neighborhood
… Ballroom dancing works the backs of the thighs and
buttock muscles differently from many other types of exercise,”
says Ken Richards, professional dancer and spokesman for USA
Dance, the national governing body of DanceSport (competitive
ballroom dancing).
Specific Benefits of Different Dances
If you’re looking for specific health results, here’s a breakdown
of the benefits of some popular dances. Just remember that
any type of dancing is better than no dancing at all!
Belly Dancing

Improved posture and muscle toning
Maintains flexibility
Helps prevent lower back problems
Tones and firms arms and shoulders
Helps with weight loss
Helps prepare women for childbirth
Reduces stress

Dancing Off Those Calories
How many calories will you burn while dancing? That
depends on the type of dancing. Here’s a range of some
of the most popular varieties, based on a 150-pound
person, per hour:

Swing dancing: 235 calories/hour
Ballroom dancing: 265
Square dancing: 280
Ballet: 300
Belly dancing: 380
Salsa dancing: 420+
Aerobic dancing: 540+

Ballroom Dancing

Conditions the body
Helps keep the heart in shape
Builds and increases stamina
Develops the circulatory system
Strengthens and tones legs and body
Increases flexibility and balance
Helps with weight loss
Relieves stress

Salsa Dancing

Builds endurance and stamina
Helps with weight loss
Relieves stress
Helps you release toxins via sweating
May help lower blood pressure and improve cholesterol
levels
Can lead to a reduced heart rate over time

Square Dancing

Provides cardiovascular conditioning
May lead to a slower heart rate, lower blood pressure
and an improved cholesterol profile
Strengthens bones
Helps you develop strong social ties
Loosens and tones muscles

Physical benefits aside, dancing has a way of brightening
up a person’s day, says ballroom owner and operator Karen
Tebeau.
“A lot of times, when people come into the studio, it’s
because there’s been a change in their life: a divorce or
they’ve been through a period of depression. They (continue)
coming in, and you see a big change. After a while, they’re
walking in with a sunny expression. You know it’s the dancing
that’s doing that,” she says.

What Causes Hearing Loss

?

  1. 1. What problems can affect the outer ear?
  1. 2. What problems can affect the middle ear?
  1. 3. What problems can affect the inner ear?

What Problems Can Affect The Outer Ear?

Anything that completely blocks the ear canal can cause hearing loss. Blockage with earwax (also called cerumen) is common. A doctor can cure this easily by removing the wax either with specially designed instruments or by flushing with water. There are many over-the-counter wax control preparations that can be used at home. However, they sometimes can cause external ear infections.

FACTS

Q: Is it a good idea to remove wax inside the ear with cotton-tipped swabs?

A: No. The ear has a natural self-cleaning mechanism. Ear skin normally sheds from the inside out. If you place a drop of ink on the eardrum and wait a few weeks, it will turn up near the opening of the ear. The ear canal is also a shaped like a funnel, with the narrow end near the eardrum. Cotton swabs generally push wax deeper into the ear than it normally is (wax forms only in the outer segment of the ear canal), and packs it into a mass. As long as there is even a pinhole opening in the packed wax, hearing is usually good. However, when the canal is completely blocked by wax, substantial hearing loss develops.

Many other problems can block the ear canal and lead to hearing loss. Such blocking causes a decrease in volume but does not generally produce distortion. These problems include:

Infections with swelling that shuts the ear canal

Foreign bodies in the ear

An injury

Birth defects

A growth in the ear canal

Any of these, including blockage by wax, may result in conductive hearing loss. That is, it interferes with sound conduction and is generally correctable. It causes decrease in volume but does not generally produce distortion.

What Problems Can Affect The Middle Ear?

Problems that can affect the middle ear and lead to hearing loss include:

Ear infections

Fluid in the ear

Otosclerosis

Birth defects

Tumors

Ear infections

Temporary hearing loss is commonly caused by ear infections. Middle ear infections cause swelling of the lining in the middle ear, and often an accumulation of fluid (such as pus). When there is fluid behind the eardrum and surrounding the ossicles (the three small bones in the ear), these structures cannot work properly, and hearing loss results.

Infections are usually treated with antibiotics, sometimes with decongestants, and occasionally with drainage by placing a small hole in the eardrum (a procedure called myringotomy). If infections are severe or inadequately treated, they may cause permanent hearing loss by damaging the ossicles or perforating the eardrum.

Nice To Know:

Most perforations (holes) in the eardrum heal spontaneously. When one does not, it can nearly always be repaired with surgery. The procedure is usually relatively fast, and is generally performed under local anesthesia.

Glue ear

Ear fluid not caused by infection accumulates commonly in children, and sometimes in adults. The condition is known as glue ear, or chronic otitis media with effusion (OME). It sometimes requires drainage through a myringotomy or with the placement of ear tubes. This ordinarily eliminates the hearing loss almost instantly.

Fluid in the ear usually is due to malfunction of the eustachian tube, which connects the ear with the back of the throat. The job of the eustachian tube is to keep the pressure in the middle ear approximately the same as that in the ear canal and outside world.

The eustachian tube does this by opening momentarily when we swallow or yawn.

If it fails to open because of swelling, allergy, or other reasons, the air already in the middle ear becomes trapped.

Gradually, this air is absorbed into the bloodstream. The middle ear space is bony except for the eardrum. As absorption occurs and less and less air is present, its disappearance creates a vacuum (negative pressure), which sucks the eardrum toward the middle ear (retracted ear drum).

When the negative pressure is great enough, it causes fluid to seep out of the blood vessels that line the middle ear. This is the fluid that constitutes glue ear.

The presence of fluid causes hearing loss, and sometimes frequently recurring ear infections. In some cases, the eustachian tube starts to work again spontaneously and the condition resolves. In others, decongestants may be helpful. When allergy is the cause, allergy treatments may improve the problem.

When the condition causes frequent middle ear infections (acute otitis media) some physicians recommend the long-term use of antibiotics, although this treatment is currently controversial.

For more information about middle ear infections, go to Middle Ear Infection.

Otosclerosis

Otosclerosis is a common hereditary disease in which new bone is deposited around one of the tiny bones in the middle ear, specifically around the footplate of the stapes (or ‘stirrup’) bone. This prevents normal bone transmission of sound from the eardrum to the inner ear, and consequently, conductive hearing loss results.

This hereditary condition is present in about 10 percent of white Americans, and it causes significant hearing loss in about one percent. It occurs less commonly in black and Asian people. Otosclerosis generally becomes apparent during early adult life, and the severity of hearing loss can be accelerated by pregnancy.

This type of hearing loss can be cured by a surgical procedure called stapedectomy, in which the stapes bone is replaced by an artificial bone. This procedure usually only takes 30 or 40 minutes, and it is performed under local anesthesia (in which the person is awake). In many cases, hearing can return to normal after surgery.

Birth defects

Various birth defects may also involve the middle ear and cause hearing loss. Some are major and cause obvious external defects. Many involve only the inner ear structures. In any case, most conductive hearing loss, in which sound waves are not transmitted effectively to the inner ear, is surgically treatable.

Tumors

Tumors of the middle ear may be responsible for hearing loss. They may be cancerous (malignant) or noncancerous (benign).

Examples of cancerous tumors are rhabdomyosarcoma, a very rare muscle tumor, in children or squamous cell carcinoma in adults.

Examples of noncancerous tumors are glomus tumors (which also cause pulsating ear noises) or neuromas of the facial nerve.

Cholesteatoma is a common noncancerous skin cyst that grows slowly and dissolves adjacent bone as it grows. It is a fairly common problem, especially in people who have had repeated ear infections; but it may also occur from birth. It generally requires surgery to remove the cyst.

What Problems Can Affect The Inner Ear?

There are many conditions that cause the delicate inner portion of the ear to function abnormally. They include:

Otosclerosis

Presbycusis

Fistula

Head injury

Meniere’s syndrome

Noise

Infections

Sudden deafness

Neural problems

Otosclerosis

Otosclerosis (the hereditary disease in which bone deposits collect around the small bone in the middle ear known as the stirrup) can also affect the cochlea (the coiled tube in the inner ear), and cause hearing loss in some people.

Presbycusis

The natural aging process also causes sensorineural hearing loss, in which the damage lies in the inner ear, the hearing nerve, or both. Beginning shortly after birth, we begin to lose hair cells and nerve endings within the cochlea (the region that hears very high frequencies). As this loss pattern progresses over a lifetime, sensorineural hearing loss develops.

There also are other age-related causes of hearing loss, including stiffening of portions of the cochlea and loss of nerve endings in the acoustic nerve.

Fistula

A fistula (opening) is an abnormal connection between the inner ear and middle ear. The inner ear is filled with fluid, and the middle ear is filled with air. If a fluid leak occurs from the inner ear, hearing loss and dizziness commonly result. This kind of hearing loss often is cured by surgically repairing the fistula. Such leaks are usually caused by trauma. The trauma may be direct, such as a blow to the ear or a head injury in a car accident. However, it may also be the result of air pressure changes in an airplane trip, a forceful sneeze, or lifting a heavy object.

Head injury

Direct head trauma, particularly trauma severe enough to cause unconsciousness, can cause inner ear concussions and hearing loss.

Meniere’s syndrome

Meniere’s syndrome is a condition characterized by fluctuating hearing loss (usually more prominent in the lower frequencies where we hear speech), dizziness, fluctuating ear pressure, and tinnitus (a noise sensation heard in one or both ears). It is due to a swelling and fluid overload of the middle compartment of the inner ear (a condition known as endolymphatic hydrops).

There are many treatable causes of Meniere’s syndrome. When all tests have revealed none of the known causes, the condition is classified as Meniere’s disease.

Noise

Noise is an important cause of hearing loss. An estimated 7 to 10 million people in American industry have noise-induced hearing loss, virtually all of which was preventable. In addition to industrial noise, recreational noise can damage hearing. Such noise is encountered commonly from gunfire, power tools, snow blowers, motorcycles, loud music (especially with earphones) and other causes.

In some cases, the playing of musical instruments can damage hearing. This has been reported not only with loud, electrical rock and roll instruments, but also with classical music performance such as violin playing and flute playing. One can minimize such problems by using ear protection whenever practical, such as during selected practice sessions.

Infections

Infections involving the inner ear and hearing nerve can also produce deafness. Middle ear infections can spread to the inner ear, causing loss of hearing and, usually, dizziness. Infections may also involve the hair cells or acoustic nerve, causing hearing loss and even sudden total deafness.

For more information about middle ear infections, go to Middle Ear Infection.

Sudden deafness

Sudden deafness may be caused by a variety of problems. Treatment is controversial, but there is some evidence to suggest that aggressive treatment may improve the chances for hearing recovery even after a sudden profound loss. Once the condition has been present for more than two or three weeks, even the most aggressive treatments generally do not work.

Neural problems

Neural (nerve-related) problems may also produce hearing loss. Among the more common are:

Acoustic neuroma, a common tumor of the acoustic nerve

Multiple sclerosis

Autoimmune sensorineural hearing loss, in which the body attacks its own ear

Ototoxicity, which is hearing loss caused by a substance that gets into the body; most often the substance is a medication, particularly certain antibiotics, but other toxins (such as lead) may also cause hearing loss

FACTS

What is an acoustic neuroma?

An acoustic neuroma is a common tumor of the acoustic nerve, the nerve responsible for hearing. It generally starts in the internal auditory canal, the bony channel through which the nerve courses as it goes from the ear to the brain. Acoustic neuromas grow, compressing the brainstem and other structures, including the facial nerve.

Ordinarily, these tumors can be cured with surgery. They are managed best by neurotologists, inner ear subspecialists with particular interest and expertise in treatment of this specific tumor. Neurotologists often work in collaboration with a neurosurgeon. In the majority of cases, it is possible to remove acoustic neuromas without serious injury and without facial paralysis. In some tumors diagnosed early, it is even possible to preserve hearing (despite the fact that the tumor has its roots in the acoustic nerve).

Understanding Electronic Toothbrush Dental Care

Not everyone is familiar with the way an electronic toothbrush dental care regime works or how effective it is in oral hygiene. Generally, once people learn about the benefits of this form of teeth maintenance they do not hesitate to jump on board and join the millions of other people who are using it daily. An electronic toothbrush works at a rapid-fire rate to help reduce and even totally eliminate cavities in both children and adults. In comparison to a standard toothbrush, the electronic toothbrush is far more effective and far more proficient at keeping teeth better maintained for as long as a lifetime. The brush is actually an attachment which fixes on to the base or the handle of the toothbrush. The base of the toothbrush holds the battery and the battery can be plugged in nightly to charge while you sleep, though many models can work for as long as 2 or 3 weeks without needing a recharge. The initial investment in an electronic toothbrush is more expensive than purchasing a single manual or traditional toothbrush, yet it saves money in the long run by providing exceptional dental care and eliminating the need for as many visits to the dentist for decay and plaque buildup.Once people realize the proactive method that an electronic toothbrush provides, they are amazed at the results of how much brighter and whiter their teeth appear. Though improving a smile and whiter teeth is a significant advantage, the most important benefits cannot be seen with the untrained eye. When you use an electronic toothbrush for dental care, you are not only improving the appearance of your teeth and gaining much fresher breath; you are also giving your gums better health care. Gums are at risk on a regular basis and gum disease is extremely common in people. Gum disease is most often caused by people not brushing well enough and by not taking good enough care of their teeth.By investing in an electronic toothbrush, you are being assertive in taking care of your teeth and your gums. Gums need stimulation and the electric toothbrush provides the necessary stimulation, as well as working to remove food deposits that build up between your teeth and cause tooth decay.Over time, if not properly cared for, teeth will decay and rot and will need to be pulled out. To gain the best dental care possible, try using an electronic toothbrush to give your teeth a fighting chance at staying healthy, disease and decay-free, and cleaner.
